Lady with low back pain

Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical attention and can affect individuals of all ages. At Modbury Physio, we understand the significant impact that low back pain can have on your daily life and overall well-being. This blog post aims to provide you with valuable tips on self-management, the role of manual therapy, and how to evaluate your progress effectively.

IMAGING

Lumbar Spine MRI

Visualises anatomy and pathology using X-Ray, MRI, CT, and Ultrasound, but the technology is costly. The challenges include frequent abnormal findings in individuals without symptoms, limited ability to give a prognosis or guide treatment, and poor correlation with treatment results.

Back pain patients with early scans:

  • 12 times higher risk of surgery.
  • 23% higher risk of receiving opioids.
  • Slightly higher pain at last consultation.
  • 45% higher cost.

When to get imaging:

  • Routine imaging is not advised.
  • If we suspect any serious underlying medical condition: eg: cancer.
  • If we are referring you to a surgeon to determine if surgery is needed.
  • If you want reassurance.

Low Back Pain: Self Management and Treatment

SELF-MANAGEMENT

  • Exercise is Key: It's a fantastic tool that helps you build confidence and self-reliance.
  • Your Improvement Matters: You don't need specific exercises to improve your back pain.
  • Focus on Function: The main goal of exercises is to restore and maintain your daily activities.

TREATMENT

  • Your Choice Matters: If you want and respond well to manual therapy, it will likely help you.
  • Achieve Your Goals: Manual therapy can help you reach the goals that matter most to you.
  • You're in Control: Improvement is possible even without manual therapy.
  • Part of the Toolbox: Manual therapy is just one of many options to help you feel better.

Myths About Low Back Pain

Spinal Curves
  • Sitting is not directly linked to increased back pain.
  • Increased spinal curves like lordosis (inward) and kyphosis (outward) are not linked to low back pain.
  • Lifting heavy objects does not cause low back pain. However using good technique and being stronger is beneficial
